Video Power update: good stuff happening!
The first half of 2018 has treated us really well! So much has happened...here’s a quick overview.
We’re happy to see several films completed in the last few months: Déploiements (Stéphanie Lagarde), Papieren Land (Marie van Vollenhoven & Shahib Sidow), Score (Joep Hinssen), Tweespraak (Lienke Roos) and Outside (Beny Wagner). Papieren Land had a packed avant-première in Cinema Lumière on 29 May, followed by a Q&A with the fimmakers by Petra Quaedvlieg. Déploiements premiered at The State is not a Work of Art (Talinn Art Hall) and featured in Frieze Magazine and Metropolis M. Tweespraak had its avant-premiere during a debate evening in Zaltbommel on 15 March.
Exciting news on the distribution front. After its premiere at Lo schermo dell’arte in Florence and a selection for Rencontres Internationales, Graham Kelly’s Hello Joe won the Best Experimental Film award at WatchOut ! Film Festival 2018! Congratulations Graham! Also worth mentioning: Helen Anna Flanagan’s “The Dynamists” was selected for the 2018 Film And Video Poetry Symposium in Los Angeles. Helen sat down for a nice interview with the organizers which you can read here. Finally on 7 March we organised a screening in Cinema Lumière with Meet Maastricht and Cinesud, featuring Laura Laura Laura, Dakloos voor een Week and XSSgranted:geniusLoci.
So what’s happening at Video Power HQ now? We’re currently working on thirteen projects. Dating Applicatie (Michiel Ubels) and When your hands are tight, can you still love me? (Jonathan Lee) are nearing completion, so stay tuned. Jan Opstal had a successful crowdfunding for his documentary about an aids support group in Johannesburg. Many thanks to the supporters! The latest Video Power production is Quenton Miller’s project which involves filming models of renowned architects Herzog & De Meuron with miniature cameras and cranes. The project was selected during last week’s pitch (11 June). Big thanks to the other pitchers Nils Hanssen, Thomas Claessens and Kasper Vandenberghe, and of course to the wonderful jury: Charlotte Lagro, Theus Zwakhals (LIMA) and Emiel Chung!
