LOOP Barcelona is a yearly event studying and promoting video art consisting of a fair, a festival and side activities. This year’s edition took place from 18-27 May. We were happy to visit the event with a large delegation: Hans van Hezik (producer), Rosa Vrij (distribution) and three members of Maastricht University’s Premium team: Anne Scheffler, Sulina Tans and Juliana Velandia Gomez.
The fair took place at a luxurious hotel, where many of the rooms host a gallerist presenting video works. Collectors, artists or regular visitors would be watching the film while making themselves comfortable on the hotel furniture or even laying on the bed, creating an intimate atmosphere.
One of the fair's highlights was ‘M3x3’ by Analivia Cordeiro (1973), a work that is considered as the first video artwork in Brazil. The video portrays a computer generated choreography consisting of a number of fixed positions, executed by nine performers in a space marked by a grid. The choreography, costumes, architecture, rhythm and camera angles merge into an entity in which the system overpowers the individual.
The festival focused on the theme ‘Winding the clock back: a contemporary archeology of video art’ and was spread out over different locations in the city center. This program was enriched by interviews with artists that had a great influence on the development of video art and were ahead of their time, such as Chip Lord and Mary Lucier.
The Loop organization was of great help, inviting our Premium Team to several of the private professional meetings. We look back on the event with great memories and are looking forward to the next edition! In the meantime, keep an eye on Loop's website, as it will feature several of the event's videos soon. http://loop-barcelona.com

On the night of 15th of April from 20:00 - 24:00 artists and designers are welcome to bring their own projector and show their work on the walls of the Van Eyck during the first Maastricht edition of Bring Your Own Beamer. The Van Eyck organizes this one-night-art event in collaboration with Video Power – the platform that fuels the creative production of moving images in the Euregion – presenting this worldwide phenomenon in the framework of the first Museum night held in the city of Maastricht.
Artists and designers, professionals and students are invited to participate; artwork must be suitable for public display, but aside from that, the walls are yours.
All you need to bring is a projection device and imagery to take part; we will provide a power source and a lots of white walls.
More = More, so we expect audiovisual bravado, visual experiments, quirky animations, remarkable home videos, cutting edge video art and interactive installations!
If you are interested in throwing your own beam, you can sign up and participate in this event by sending an email to Erica Petrillo: firstname.lastname@example.org (deadline 8th of April). Make sure to sign up in time to reserve your spot of white wall!
Everyone is welcome to visit the Van Eyck during the night of 15th of April to experience Bring your own Beamer. BYOB is part of the first Museumnacht Maastricht (Museum Night Maastricht): throughout the city you can visit the participating museums and art institutes of Maastricht from 20:00-24:00, tickets are available here.
Bring Your Own Beamer (or short BYOB) a project initiated by the Dutch web artist Rafaël Rozendaal. Curated by different people around the world, it has already been organized dozens of times since its first edition in 2010 in cities like Moscow, Belfast, Houston and Paris.
Joep Hinssen's future film 'Nederland-Spanje: de Symfonie' is on voordekunsten.nl
Currently Joep is working on a project based on a major international soccer match; the match between the Netherlands and Spain during the last World Cup. Joep is fascinated in how the unpredictable spectacle is connected to the reactions of the supporters and how these reactions have their own codes. Despite their massiveness these codes result in a collective and organized ritual that accompanies and strengthens the narrative of the game.
His goal is to take this contest through a classic musical filter and transform into a musical performance. Our goal is to help him get a donation of 2.500€ to get this project started.
Video Power just welcomed four motivated master’s students of the Maastricht University in the framework of the exclusive Honours programme Premium. Their assignment is to think about creative ways to tap into new audiences. First thoughts were about pop-up cinemas to soothen long time waiting experiences... We are very curious with what you'll come up, ladies!
